Organic Honey
Currently, the Reserve is a region with a major coffee production and to make the most of the area and provide and additional alternative to local inhabitants, we created the project “Network of Organic Beekeepers”.
The program capitalizes the investment in coffee areas so with a lesser effort honey can be obtained from the coffee flowers and mainly from shade trees that are used as part of good practices of sustainable coffee, and also from the flowers of surrounding forests.
Therefore, the development of beekeeping seeks the creation of productive organizations and their strengthening, provide additional income, reduce pressure on forests, integrate more people - especially women - in the productive process, reduce migration and improve their quality of life.
It is worth mentioning that the project has already achieved its initial goals, and there are two groups selling honey. However, the scheme should grow and become professional so beekeeping and the sale of value-added products represent the diversification and the increased income for families as well as the improvement of their life quality, since these activities are environmentally friendly.
This program uses resources of ALSEA Foundation, El Triunfo Conservation Fund with resources of Banamex, CONANP, Embajadores Las Nubes, The Nature Conservancy, USAID, USFISH and Wildlife Service.
