Research and Monitoring

In the Reserve continuous field trips are performed to monitor key species that allow to know the current condition of the place. There are several multidisciplinary research projects that focus on different groups of animal and plant species.

Strategic advances in the management of the area are evident; however, important weaknesses still exist to ensure the conservation of the unique ecosystems of El Triunfo, as well as the areas of influence and the biological corridors in the Sierra Madre. One of these is the lack of information about management results. To date there is no comprehensive strategy for assessing the conservation and management efforts or a tool for having this information in a timely manner.

Moreover mountain ecosystems, particularly cloud forests, are habitats that will suffer significant effects due to climate change. Variations in the amount of moisture and mist, as well as periods of drought and rainfall intensity may change with time, natural regimes of these ecosystems, leading to changes in the composition of biodiversity. However without the basic information it will be difficult to integrate adaptive management proposals that are opportune and that contribute to conservation.

Due to the great importance of monitoring for the Reserve and its areas of influence, we support projects like the creation of a community monitoring network, the development of monitoring protocols for priority species, and the distribution of the information generated, among others.
