Restoration

Weather conditions have significantly affected the Reserve, a clear example is the impact that hurricane Stan caused in the area in the late 2005. According to CONANP (National Commission for Natural Protected Areas), 28,000 hectares within the Reserve were damaged, especially the buffer zone where local producers need to continue using their natural resources.

For this reason, we located areas likely to be restored in order to develop a strategy in which farmers and producers have been actively involved in the decision making, as well as in the development of a strategic plan and its implementation.

To carry out this activity, it has been necessary to create awareness in local communities so they recognize the nature of the area they live in, the importance of restoration for the maintenance of hydrological and ecological processes, and to reduce human risk for possible landslides and floods.

The agencies involved in this program are Biodiversity, Conservation and Restoration A.C. in collaboration with CONANP-Southern Border Region, El Colegio de la Frontera Sur, Pronatura Sur, The Nature Conservancy, The Institute of Natural History, and Banamex Social and Ecological Development Fund through El Triunfo Conservation Fund.
