Social Participation

For years local people have participated directly in activities related to the management of El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve. From mere recipients of information to active players in conservation and management, local people are now involved in pilot projects, the planning with staff of the Reserve and the management for the sustainable use of resources at the landscape level.

However, it is necessary that rural communities increase their organization, technical and computing capacities for decision-making with a sense or environmental responsibility. In other words, we want to create environmental citizens.

This concept considers the rights and responsibilities of each actor versus the environment, as well as two key notions involved in the concept of citizenship: equality and participation.

The objective is to create involved citizens who understand and exert their environmental rights and, in turn, are willing to exercise their own environmental responsibility. The latter is essential to establish efficient mechanisms for dialogue and accountability between the actors who converge in the REBITRI.
