The El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve (RBET, from its designation in Spanish), situated in an area of 119,177 hectares (460 sq. miles) in the Sierra Madre of Chiapas, protects one of the last great remnants of cloud forest in Mexico. It is home to 47% of the animal species registered in Chiapas (24% of the species in the country).
The Reserve plays a very important part in the absorption of water, which helps to maintain both local agricultural economies and the most important hydroelectric system in the State. Its abundant vegetation cover prevents soil erosion and the generation of natural landslides. In order to assure the long-term conservation of El Triunfo, the
Fondo de Conservación El Triunfo AC ( El Triunfo Conservation Fund or FONCET, from its designation in Spanish), was established with the objective of conserving the natural resources and promoting the social development of the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve and its region of influence by means of sustainable, long-term economic support.
