The Reserva de la Biosfera El Triunfo (RBET ) , situated in an area of 119,177 hectares (460 sq. miles) in the Sierra Madre of Chiapas, protects one of the last great remnants of cloud forest in Mexico, which plays a very important part in the absorption of water, thus helping to maintain local agricultural economies and the most important hydroelectric system in the State.
With five core conservation zones and a buffer zone protected by Federal Decree, this area has formed since 1993 a part of the international network of Biosphere Reserves maintained by UNESCO. |

b)
Ecological , being one of the regions of highest rainfall in Mexico, thus supplying the water sources which irrigate the central and coastal areas of Chiapas, and possessing a vegetation cover which prevents soil erosion and natural landslides; and
c) Socio-economic , as, with its water, it sustains the development of agriculture and cattle-rearing in the zones of Fraylesca, Soconusco, the Coastal and Central Isthmus, as well as providing hydroelectric energy to the whole country .
